Theories of Asian Architecture
To uncover and understanding architectural intentions of the traditional past. 01. Contextual Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street
The first project for this module, I was required to venture into the heart of Kuala Lumpur city and discover the historical architectural elements along a street of my choice. Upon these finding, I then had to sketch the buildings and their details onto 8 A4 sized papers, along with a cover page and an ending summary. My chosen street was Jalan Tun HS Lee.
02. Poster & Seminar-Contemporary Issues in Asian Architecture
The second project is a group project, where we were required to point out issues relating to a chosen traditional street from the first project and discuss solutions to then in the form of a research poster. For this, our chosen street was Jalan Tun HS Lee.
Reflection
From this module, I had gained knowledge about many things related to traditional Asian Architecture, such as how much detail and thought is put into the architectural design and intention of building placements, decorative elements and practical elements. I've also leaned many of such things within Kuala Lumpur itself during the first project, tied with how deep the history of a building can run throughout the generations. Then from the second project, I begin to understand how jeopardizing globalisation and modernisation can be to the preservation of old traditional architecture and their cultural or historical significance. All in all, this module has broadened my perspective towards Asian architecture.
