Building Construction & Materials
Through learning fundamental building construction and material employment within small-medium scale building projects. This module emphasises understanding the principles of materials like concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and glass through exploration of its manufacturing processes, properties and application in construction.
01. Material Experience in Architecture
The first project for this module was a group project, where we had to conduct research regarding the construction materiality, building background, and details about one building within Malaysia. For our group, we had chosen the commercial building Lalaport BBCC in Bukit Bintang. After conducting research, ee were then told to compile our finding =s into a single A1 sized poster.
02. Construction Details (ADII Integration)
The second project for Building Construction & Materials was an integrated project with my final project in Architectural Design II. Wherein, I was required to provide a 3m×3m cut section within my Nature Retreat, showing materiality, construction and joinery from the roof to its foundation, followed by a 1:25 scale model of the section and one special construction detail.
Reflection
During this module, I've learned a lot when it came to the technical practices of construction in architecture, especially in what should be used in certain situations and which construction method is best suited in certain kinds of conditions. I've also learned the importance of architectural construction and the reason for each of its designs. While there were some times I found it confusing to grasp all of these different construction methods, in the end I feel like the hours spent learning about all of them are worth it for furthering my architecture journey.
