Architectural Design V

Architectural Design V emphasizes the idea of ‘place-making for the urban communities, exploring its notion and architecture that respond to urban responsive design approaches. Students engage with urban studies and strategy/concept development, following up with a major project involving the development of design schemes that engage with the spirit of place and the everyday life of the urban community.

01. Preliminary Studies - 'Townscape Appraisal'

The first project for my fifth studio module. We were required to perform site analysis and study of our given site: Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. Investigating the meaning of a place and its architecture for place-making to achieve a responsive architecture design within urban context and place-making led urban space, done by proposing an urban intervention of a selected microsite to create a walkable, safe and inclusive space.

02. Urban Design Strategies

The second project of Architectural Design V had us work individually to synthesise and respond to the related issues identified in the first project and to determine the sense of place, discuss relevant precedent studies and to depict a good understanding to design strategy within the urban context for both architecture and urban space.  We were expect to produce a preliminary schematic design and an analysis for our target user group for our learning centre.

03. Architecture for Place-Making

The third and final project of Architectural Design V, I was tasked to design a 1200sqm across 3-5 floors for a learning centre, along with an adjoining urban plaza in our microsite within Brickfields. Both the centre and plaza are to reflect on the found issues and inspirations from both Project 1 and 2 to develop a narrative on architectural strategy in response to the urban community and its context.

Reflection

During the start of this module, I personally struggled to connect with Brickfields and find understanding with its community and architectural possibilities. However, as the projects went on and I studied its heritage and history better, I was able to appreciate Brickfields and its urban significance more. Eventually being able to come up with projects of my own that I found satisfaction and enjoyment in creating, truly feeling proud of the results that I was able to produce.
