Architectural Design III

Architectural Design II introduces the exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture, and the concept of neighbourhood and community. It also aims to develop an awareness of a wider place, a genius locus, and the design response towards the place, emphasising ‘experiencing space and place’ in architecture.

01. Poetic Assemblage: Choreography + Envelope

The first project for my third studio module. Being assigned into groups of 4 or 5, we were required to observe and document bodily movements of an assigned dance choreography with ethnographic drawings. Then understand the meaning of the dance to continue on to a form-making process to achieve a choreography-informed envelope for a bodily-conscious, affective, expressive and experimental flagship construct for a "Pas de Deux".

02. Chronicle & Manuscript: The Place & the Space

The second project of Architectural Design III is split into two segments. Part A is an entire studio effort and Part B within the same group as project 1. In Part A, we were required to produce a site chronicle, which was an in-depth analysis book regarding the site assigned to us. The site was in Malacca, specifically the area around the Encore Theatre of Impression City.  Part B requires us to utilise the site chronicle to produce a visceral board regarding an assigned community and it's relation to the site.

03. Reclaimed Architecture: A Dance Annexe

The third and final project of Architectural Design III, where I had to design a 450sqm building inclusive of a dance hall, gallery and other spaces. Mine was to be made for the Baba Nyonya community of Malacca.

Reflection

Throughout this module, I have gained a deeper understanding of designing spaces tailored to specific users and creating designs that respond thoughtfully to environmental conditions. I have also improved my ability to conceptualize ideas and illustrate them more effectively through architectural drawings and models. While there were times when I struggled with the workload and the process of refining designs, the effort ultimately led to outcomes that left me feeling genuinely satisfied.
