Architectural Design II
Architectural Design II introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction, and synthesis in design thinking that are common to many design fields, including building and architecture. It mainly emphasises “User and Context”, which investigates the relationship between the user and the natural environment. Investigating architectural spaces and construction through precedent studies, and the exploration of form and space through conceptualisation.
01. Diagramming Architectural Principles
The first project for my second studio module. Being assigned into groups of 6, we were required to explore the architectural design of a designated building through abstraction and analysis through 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional compositions of space with 5 diagrams and models. Our designated building was the Baan Tita House in Thailand, by Yangnar Studio.
02. Designing with Architectural Principle & Materiality
The second project of Architectural Design II is another group project, wherein in groups of 3, we had to conduct a site analysis on our given site and design a Nature Observatory of floor area 50m^2. Our given site was Danau Perikanan in the National Botanical Gardens Shah Alam.
03. Designing with Architectural Principles, Materiality, Context & User
The third and final project of Architectural Design II, where I had to design a 150m^2 Nature Retreat for 4 specific users within a 300m^2 boundary alongside the Nature Observatory in the second project. This assignment consists of creating a scaled 1:50 model, 5 development models of no particular scale, and presentation boards with various architectural drawings.
Reflection
Throughout this module, I've come to understand how creating spaces intended for specific users work and also to create designs that are alert to its environment conditions. I've also come to improve my initial creative ability to conceptualise designs and to illustrate them better in an architectural way through drawings and models. Although there were times where I found myself struggling with the workload and the back and forth of going through designs, it all resulted in outcomes where I felt truly satisfied with.
