Architectural Design I

To present and explain design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body, construction, and materiality in terms of tectonics. Architectural Design I introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design. Enhanced with the understanding of anthropometrics and designing intrapersonal space with creative exercise involving the body movements and experiences of the user.

01. Geometry & Form

The first project for my first studio module in architecture. I was required to design and create three 100mm×100mm models, each using the same ordering principles but different primary elements (point, line & plane), a fourth model using the same principle but with more than one primary element, and four 100mm×100mm tattoo stamps of the fourth model. For my project, I decided on using Hierarchy as my principle.

02. MY Bamboo

The second project of Architectural Design I is an Impact Lab group project, wherein we had to construct a 15m^3 bamboo structure aimed towards a specific community. At the end of the project, our structures will be brought to the chosen community location for the public's use.

The community we were assigned to build our structures for were the special needs kids from P3KU at USJ18. The images to the right are the scaled models of our design, and the image above is the actual structure at the P3KU Site.

03. Space and Sensory

The third and final project of Architectural Design I, consisting of creating a scaled 1:20 model of a 30m^3 structure using more than one of the four given materials (white modelling board as steel, greyboard as concrete, perspex as glass, and balsa wood as timber), along with a presentation board with various architectural drawings.

Reflection

Throughout this module, I've learned many things I otherwise had not known before, like ergonomics and anthropometry regarding spaces. I was able to create spaces of my own ideas and concepts. I've learned that time management was also really important when taking this module, balancing the workload I had during this semester proved a challenge when it required a lot of my hours for multiple different assignment at a time. But overall, I came into architecture knowing there would be heavy workload and i know that all this would be worth it in the end.
